Project 4 – Montage

EleThompson-P4Montage

Description

I created a photo montage using Adobe Photoshop that is centered on a spiritual message.

Process (Programs, Tools, Skills, Steps taken while designing)

For this assignment, since it required that we create a photo montage I decided on a theme first and then sought out images that might match that theme. I decided I wanted my quote to be about light and so I looked through my personal collection of stock photos that I had downloaded over the last year from Death to the Stock Photo and decided on several images I liked that had good lighting and could work with a spiritual message. I then found a quote I liked and found a picture of Christ that had him looking away from the viewer. Using Photoshop I brought both images in to a letter size file and created an image mask for the image of Christ. I framed the photo so that the girl was following the rule of thirds lines and to also have the sunset/sunrise stand out on the left side of the image. Using various opacities sizes of brushes I was able to mask out the surroundings of Christ in the original photo and I flipped the image vertically  so he was facing the other direction. I added the Gaussian blur filter to the background of the image to make the foreground stand out more and to make my text stand out more. After the critique I decided to go with a different quote and I also used the Content Aware Fill tool to take out some of the buildings in the background.

Message

The message I am trying to communicate revolves around the quote “There will always be a spiritual light that beckons to us, giving us the hope of rescue and relief.” I wanted to communicate that the spiritual light mentioned in this quote is Jesus Christ.

Audience

My audience I guess would be anyone who could use a spiritually uplifting message. This particular quote is from an LDS general authority so LDS people could also be my audience.

Top Thing Learned

Since I have some experience using Photoshop it was good to try out different filters and effects to make my image look good. It was also nice using this new version and getting to use some of the new features like Content Aware Fill. I’d never used Adjustment Layers before and I think those are going to really come in handy in the future. They are perfect to use since they don’t actually alter the pixels of the image which is convenient.

Filter / Colorization used and where it was applied

I used the Gaussian Blur filter to make the background area a little more blurred than the original photo.

Color scheme and color names

I didn’t really have a color scheme since the only elements I added besides my montage photo that required a specific color was the text. I used white for the text.

Font Names & Categories

Futura PT, Sans serif

Lush Script, Decorative

    Ele,

I think you did a great job on this assignment. I think it’s great you looked at Death to the Stock Photo to find one of your images. It’s a stunning images. I saw your draft on Sister Tranberg’s critique video and I think you did a great job improving the layout.

I also agree that layer masks in Photoshop are fun, and almost magical.

Thanks for the comment on my assignment at https://hughmongous.wordpress.com/2016/02/14/week-6-p4-montage-project

Wow! I love your project. The pictures and quote go together perfectly with the light and overall feeling of the photo. I also love the creative alignment and emphasis you used in your text. I’ve had a couple of difficult weeks, and your project really speaks to me right now. Thank you!

Hi Ele! I love how your montage turned out! I really love the way you did the typography and how you made it span across the image. The uppercase letters, the italics and the script all work together really well. I loved the masking this week too. It’s fun to play around with images to create works of art. You should check out Tiara’s montage. It’s really pretty! https://tiarareedercomm.wordpress.com/
