Project 3 – Photodesign Project

EleThompson-Photoshop-Flyer

Description

This week we had to create a color scheme, take a photo and use both to create a flyer that showcased our color scheme using Adobe Photoshop.

Process (Programs, Tools, Skills, FOCUS principles)

I started by choosing a color scheme/number of colors that I wanted to work with. I chose the Big Split Complementary color scheme because it seemed interesting and flexible no matter what photo I chose. I then went about for a few days taking pictures of things that I found interesting. I am surrounded by a herd of 4 cats at my house so they became my main subjects. I decided on a picture of my cat Haru since it was a good example of lead room and focus. I really wanted to highlight the green color of her eyes so I used that as my first color and then found other colors I liked in the image using the eyedropper tool. I then found a quote that fit with my subject and played around with the design.

I really appreciated the feedback I got in my critiques and used those ideas to adjust my font, and added in things I was missing from the criteria. I tried to use the shape of the curve in the bottom left to draw the viewers eyes back into the image since Haru is looking directly off of the page. Overall I think the changes I made were pretty successful.

Message

The message that I am trying to convey is cat focused. I used a cat quote from Sigmund Freud (he was a big cat enthusiast) and I wanted the viewer to be drawn into and focus on the cat in the image.

Audience

The audience I am trying to communicate to would be my class, but also a potential employer to show off my photography and design skills.

Top Thing Learned

I think the best thing I learned from this assignment is that the photograph you choose for a design makes a huge impact on your design decisions. If I had created a nearly finished design first and then went out and took pictures it would not have been very successful. When I picked an image I liked, I was then able to draw inspiration from it and also make design choices that help promote the image and my message.

Color scheme and color names

I based my color scheme on the Big Split Complementary color scheme.

The colors I used were:

Green

Gold

Red

Purple

The gold doesn’t fit in exactly with the Big Split Complementary scheme but it was the closest of all the schemes.
