Description
This is the flyer I created using Microsoft Word for COMM 130. Our assignment was to create a flyer for a charity event that we could make up. We also needed to use an image that we scanned from a book, magazine, etc.
Process (Programs, Tools, Skills, FOCUS principles)
The process started with finding an image to scan. I found a picture of macarons and scanned it at 300 dpi on my all-in-one printer. I then saved the image as a JPG and inserted it into a Microsoft Word document. I then came up with the event that I wanted to promote and based my design, color, and typography choices on the audience that I was trying to appeal to. I played around with different shapes on the page and initially had decided to use some triangle shapes, stacked to create a type of diagonal banner. After getting the text and everything set I had one of my classmates, as well as my mom, critique my design. Some input I received was to mimic some of the shapes from the macaron cookies in my text layout, and to change the font of the title. I made changes based on the critique and decided to add a circular area in the center of the page to put my text into. This mimics the shape of the cookies and draws the eye to the text in the center. I also found a different font for the title that I like.
Message
The flyer is meant to tell people about a macaron cookie sale with the proceeds benefiting a non-profit called Kitty Bungalow Charm School for Wayward Cats. I actually volunteered at the Kitty Bungalow working on their website for them last year and I thought it would be fun to use them for this project.
Audience
The audience that I wanted to appeal to is the cookie or cat-loving audience. Cats and kittens are fluffy and cute so I thought they would pair perfectly with some sweet macarons. I also wanted to appeal to the Pinterest community since my macaron picture is really pink and seems like it should be a Pinterest post. I tried to keep my font choices and design consistent with something I would see on Pinterest.
Color scheme and color names
Since my image is very colorful (specifically pink) I wanted to tone it down a little by using a light blue to contrast it. I also pulled a light beige color to use for the dots around the edge of the circle to add a third color.
I believe my color scheme is loosely Triadic with the beige color falling into the Yellow group.
Blue: RGB(149, 184, 204) #95B8CC
Beige: RGB(241, 220, 197) #F1DCC5
Top Thing Learned
I think the biggest thing I learned this week was to use shapes and patterns from other elements of my design to unify the whole thing. I hadn’t thought about using the shape of the macarons to improve my design and I’m glad that I tried it.

AMAZING!!! :
I love your design, It really catches my attention and hungry
You are using wisely the script typeface for the tittle and it contrast so wel with the salg serif typefaces. The picture that you are using as white space is a good move!!
nice!!
. The D-T-P is well located, because already I´m hungry and I want to know where and when to go.
Good Job my dear Sister.

Question.
how did you create the dotted circle?
I created a circle shape and set it so the Fill had no color, and it had a dashed outline. You can adjust the size and shape of the dashes using the drawing tools.
I love the design of your flyer! The colors you used are amazing, I love how they compliment one another and work off each other, it really is a very harmonious piece. I love the font you used for your title, it is attention grabbing because it is different and stands out from the other font. I also love the photo you used, it is so bright and cheerful. Awesome job on the ad. Here a link to my project

Oh my goodness!!! I love how it turned out! I watched her critique of your design, and was so interested to see how it would turn out. I absolutely love the color scheme you chose, and I think splitting it horizontally was definitely the way to go. I think your font is perfect. I can’t believe you created this in Word! Well done.
